GLORY's "Rich and Famous Cruise
Experience the Beauty of the Bay From the Pristine Tidal Marshland to the White Sandy Beaches of the Nature Preserve
Dering Harbor: Home of the “rich and not so famous” is on Shelter Island about a mile or so due south of Preston’s Dock. This small well-protected semi’ circular harbor has some of the finest yachts in the northeast at anchorage. It the home of the venerable Shelter Island Yacht Club established in the 19th century, as well as the home of Picozzi’s Mobil station the oldest continually family run Mobil gas station in these United States. Surrounding the harbor are an eclectic collection of large homes that are quite impressive to view from the water. There is also a newly placed Osprey nest that is easy to get close to at high water. After the opening of the Long Island railroad in 1844 wealthy New Yorkers would take the train to Greenport and then board small vessels to take them across to the magnificant hotels that dotted the shoreline. The New York Yacht Club had a station in Dering Harbor and it was the location of many famous yacht races
